But my daughter was different. The first time I saw her, I literally passed out. Itdidn't help that there was an IV line straight into her forehead. I recovered to findthree other people staring helplessly down at me, probably trying to puzzle out what todo for a poor mother. But all thoughts of chicken quickly crossed the road when, thenext morning, I first heard her cry. When the nurses told me she was awake andhungry, I heard a weak voice off in the distance, and as I walked toward the ICU, Irealized that the noise must be emanating from my tiny bird baby. I couldn't imaginehow any sound could pierce the walls, around the corner and down the hall, but she'dmanaged it. I walked a little slower, dreading my first physical contact with a tinycreature.
Blearily, I made my way into the ICU. I found her by the noise rather than by anykind of visual recognition.
"Go and get comfortable," the nurse called, directing me to a rocking chair in aprivate playroom off the ICU. I sat in the chair, piled my lap high with pillows, andwaited in dread for the baby. Soon enough, the nurse was there in front of me, carryinga pink-wrapped.
I held out my arms. "Are you ready?" she asked me. I must have nodded. "Here yougo," she said, leaning over, and then added, "Here's your little dolly." Suddenly, thephrase "chicken baby" was gone. All I could hear, over and over in my mind, was "littledoily". I took a long look at the baby, brought her closer, and she latched onimmediately and began to drink.
My heart melted; I imagined I could feel its tears of relief flowing, the early milkthat welcomes a newborn after the shock of getting born. This was the milk, I realized, that would fatten her up so others, too, would recognize in her what only that nurse andI had glimpsed —— a perfect dolly; my very own little baby girl.
Some time during her first summer, as my mother and I were watching her lyingon the rug kicking her legs, my mother turned and aske
