本书是作者以给英语语言文学专业硕士研究生讲授韩礼德的《功能语法导论》过程中根据中国学生的特点编写的一本教材。该教材是北京市**建设学科项目的子项目。它有以下特点：
·全部采用英语写作；
·采用“实践-理论-实践”的方法讲述理论知识，使枯燥的语法理论清晰、明了、易懂；
·例文大多选自名著、幽默故事集等；
·每章后面都附有练习，书末附有术语和人名英汉对照索引；
