本教材是根据中等专业学校“专业英语教学大纲”的要求编写的。全书分为五部分共29个单元；**部分8个单元是金属材料基础内容；第二部分7个单元是铸造内容；第三部分6个单元是焊接内容；第四部分6个单元是热处理内容；第五部分2个单元是锻造内容。在每一部分中，分别简介了有关专业的主要内容。在每一单元中都包括课文与阅读材料，并列出生词表及文中疑难句子的注释；同时附有思考题，以加深对文章的理解。
本书既可供中等专业学校、职业学校的热加工各单一专业及复合专业作教材使用，也可为初、中级工程技术人员学习参考之用。
