1.1IntroductionandOverview
Asiaisauniqueregionwithvastland,hugepopulation,longhistory,andculturaldiversity.Asiahasexperiencedsignificantchangesoverthepastthreedecades,andwithitthehighereducationlandscapehasevolved.TheeconomyofAsiahascontinuedtogrowdespitesignificantdisruptionsfromtwofinancialcrises.Thegeopoliticalscenariohaschangedsubstantiallyinrecentyears.DevelopingcountriessuchasChinaandIndiaandregionalorganizationssuchastheAssociationofSoutheastAsianNations(ASEAN)andShanghaiCooperationOrganizationhaveemergedasmajoreconomicandpoliticalpowers.Moreover,thecombinedforcesofrapidurbanization,pervasiveglobalization,andtransformativedigitaltechnologieshavedrawnpeople,markets,work,andlearningintoever-closernetworks.
Thischaptersetsouttounpackthesocio-economicandhighereducationandresearchcontextsofAUAuniversities’homecountriesandregions(Figure1.1and1.2).
Furthermore,thischapterexamineseightimportanttrendsthathaveshapedAsianhighereducationlandscapeoverthepastfewdecades.Insteadofincludingallpossibletrendsandinfluenceshere,aselectsetoftrendsarediscussedbasedontheavailabilityofinternationallycomparable,long-termevidence.Thisdiscussionshouldserveasstimulus
forconsideringmajortendenciesthathavethepotentialtoinfluencethefutureofAsian
highereducationandtheroleofAUAwithinit,aswellasthepotentialofAsianhigher
educationtoinfluencethesebroadertrends.
