In addition to the religious, cultural, and political events occurring duringDickinson's lifetime, philosophical movements shaped her writing as well.Perhaps one of the most important movements connected to Dickinson wasTranscendentalism. This movement praised humankind's ability to transcendthe mortal world through reflection, intuition, and an openness to nature. Themovement included many writers, most notably Ralph Waldo Emerson, HenryDavid Thoreau, and Walt Whitman. They praised individualism, self-reliance,and racial and sexual equality. One of their most heretical beliefs was thatan individual could attain sublime moments of grace by studying nature andbecoming the mortal embodiment of God. The Transcendentalists believedthat individuals could have a direct relationship with God without having togo through middlemen such as ministers or religious teachers.
Transcendentalism began as a religious movement within the UnitarianChurch. Unlike the Puritans, who believed in original sin, a hostile world, and a predestined universe, the Unitarians believed that the world was basi-cally good and that people could attain salvation through good works. ManyTranscendentalists were practicing or former Unitarian ministers, includingEmerson and Theodore Parker.
As the movement grew, it responded to the major national preoccupationsof expansionism, industrialization, Abolition, women's rights, and the CivilWar. Like Dickinson, the Transcendentalists believed that the country's newfocus on profit was replacing personal craftsmanship and alienating peoplefrom their communities and natural surroundings. Transcendentalists soughtto restore the vital connection between nature, people, and God. Although not considered a Transcendentalist, Emily Dickinson was closelyaligned with the movement. She owned, read, and quoted books by Emerson, who stayed with Austin and Sue Dickinson at The Evergreens in 1857 and againin 1865.7 Although it is not known if Dickinson saw Emerson dur
