今次出版曹光平教授的20首艺术歌曲作品,体现了作者在题材和风格多方面的特点。在这些艺术歌曲作品中,古典作品的题材较多。有8首作品是为魏晋、唐代、宋代、元代、清代的诗词谱曲,另有1首作品是为印度5 世纪的古典诗歌谱曲。
表现民族风情的题材也占相当的比例,有6首作品是作者赴西藏、云南、广东、广西采风后的作品,其中《格姆夜歌》是作曲家自己写的歌词。这些作品具有浓郁的民族风格和地方特色。其他的作品则为徐志摩、林徽因、余光中等近现代诗人的作品谱曲,抒情而富于意境。
曹光平教授的艺术歌曲作品,具有优美的旋律和民族风格特色,不少作品是在中国民族调式的基础上发挥的。部分作品吸收了一些现代的非调性的元素,运用一些现代作曲技法,与民族的特点相结合。如《舟夜·太平洋遇雨》、《将进酒》、《短歌行》、《春晓》、《云使》、《子夜吴歌》、《越调·天净沙·即事》等,这些作品都是为古典诗词谱曲。
在表演形式上也有许多考虑。传统艺术歌曲是以声乐和钢琴的结合为主,这种形式在这20首作品中占11首;有8首作品加入了其他中国乐器或西洋乐器,带有室内乐的特点;而《子夜吴歌》创造性地采用无伴奏女高音独唱的独特的形式,并
