RED DOG
Chapter 2 The Accident
That night there was a bad accident and John died. But nobody remembered to tell Red Dog. He stayed at home for three weeks, alone. Then he decided to look for John. He ran into town. He went to the restaurant, but John wasn’t there. Red Dog went to the mine. Somebody cried out to him in a sad voice, “He’s not here, Red Dog.” But Red Dog didn’t hear. He kept looking for John.
After some time, Red Dog left Dampier. He went to look in other places for John Grant. He travelled on buses, but people didn’t see him. He travelled around a very big part of western Australia. He was looking for John Grant. Then he decided to return to Dampier. Everybody gave him a huge welcome. He was happy to be back. Now he knew what had happened to his friend, John Grant.
That night Red Dog felt unwell. He went to the churchyard and looked around. He found the grave of his master, John Grant. He was very tired. He lay down and fell asleep, but he didn’t wake up the next morning.
The Dampier people loved Red Dog a lot. If you go to Dampier, you can see a statue of Red Dog. He was a very special animal in this town.
