签。赵、杨先生久居美国，早已过世，又不知后人在何处，正在犯愁之际，一个偶然，我在图书馆查阅资料时，发现台湾 20 世纪 60年代出版的《传记文学》杂志中，有一幅赵元任夫妇与顾毓琇、萨本栋诸先生在南京梅花山踏雪赏梅时的合影，如获至宝。实在汗颜，此前，关于顾毓琇先生的生平我所知甚少，唯见过南京大学出版社出过一本《顾毓琇诗词选》，也没有读过，只知道他仍健在。我想，如能请顾老为此书题签不仅顺理成章，而且会为本书添彩。于是，我从南大出版社友人处打听到该书出版联系人李飞教授，他与顾老是老中大诗社的诗友。从李飞教授处获悉顾老一些基本概况和美国信址，我便试着给顾老写信，请他与夫人画家王婉靖女士双双为《浪漫人生》题签。他们都年届期颐，能否如愿，我本抱着试一试的心理。心诚则灵。半个月后，我收到顾老夫妇的题签。字写得相当漂亮，又有力度，但未附信。编辑的职业敏感，使我对顾老的生平发生浓厚的兴趣，查阅相关资料后始知，顾毓琇先生本就是位大名人，是国际电机界的泰斗，“顾氏变数”的***。又从台湾《传记文学》上他的《九二自述》中获悉，他不仅是物理大师，而且是文学家、诗人、剧作家和音乐家。早年在清华大学就读时参加过五四运动，与冰心夫妇、梁实秋、许地山等同一条船赴美留学的。后历任过清华大学工学院长、**大学校长和国立音乐学院首任院长，乃至教育部次长（以非国民党员身份），还参加过接受日本投降仪式。20 世纪 70 年代后，他多次返国内探亲、讲学，先后受到周恩来、邓小平、江泽民等党和**领导人的亲切接见，足见他的人生阅历十分丰富多彩。顾先生富有远见卓识，在 20 世纪 80年代末便建议中国应实行“三开”政策，即文化开发、经济开放和政治开明。
本来，我还想请他与夫人作为海外作家加盟“双叶丛书”。顾老坚辞，认为“不当”。后来，我便萌发想为他出一本传记的念头。我将这个想法函告顾老。他说他没有现成的中文自传，倒有一本英文本自传《一个家庭，两个世界》。我搜罗到他的著述全目和部分自传性的散文，遂正式提出为他编一部“准自传”。顾老犹豫，他说早年著作都散失。我说我可代觅。他说“鄙人意不致劳神”。在我的恳求下，他首肯了，并提供了《行云流水》《水木清华》等，但关键的一本 20 世纪 40 年代出版的《我的父亲》，我找遍南京大小图书馆都无着落。后，在沈建中先生帮助下，于上海图书馆藏书中查到，复制了一份。
