为防止盗版等问题以确保自己的权益,作者罗琳仅授权英国、美国、加拿大、澳大利亚和南非的五家出版商出版其英文版,但由于运输路径、成本等原因,国内主要引进的是英国版和美国版。在英国,版本还细分为儿童版和成人版,两者的主要区别仅是封面不同;在美国则只有一个版本。那么,美国版与英国版有什么区别呢?美国版编辑解释说,主要是因为美国英语与英国英语的细微差别所致,比如,英国用“jumper”表示套头衫,而美国认为这是跳高运动员的意思,所以,在美国版中就改用了“sweater”一词,美国版书中主要是做了类似这样的改动。

就拿即将发行的《哈利.波特6》来说,美国版和英国版封面、装帧不同,但内容除部分词汇外都是相同的,就连页码都相同,都是672页。但依据笔者对过去两个版本的比较,英国版用纸泛黄,美国版的纸张稍白,因此,美国版的字体与纸张对比反差较大,阅读不易疲劳;另外,美国版开本也大些,字体行间距也大些,这也是便于阅读的因素。笔者认为,英国版的封面、装帧和印刷等主要体现的是古典神秘风格,而美国版的设计则较为现代明朗一些。往年,美国版引进的数量很
