本教材与前两版一样，针对的读者对象是口腔医学教育 8 年制学生。本书涵盖了本科和研究生教育的内容。本教材尽可能从临床实用的角度出发，介绍相关的基本理论、临床知识和技能，同时反映学科的新进展。因此，本教材既可以作为本科生教材，也可以作为研究生教材，还可作为毕业后继续教育的学习用书。第 3 版教材的第三章增加了 2018 年牙周病和植体周病国际新分类介绍；第四章增加了第四次全国口腔健康流行病学调查结果；第五章在牙周病微生物致病机制、牙周致病菌与疾病关系中更加强调了菌斑生物膜的概念，增加了应用 FISH 技术对龈上、龈下菌斑结构观察的内容。
