清末以降，大量的中国佛教造像流失美国。对美国博物馆藏造像的调查、著录与研究是中国艺术史、美术考古、佛学等诸多学科领域研究的必要课题。本书上编在实地调查三大馆藏佛教雕塑、绘画、工艺及建筑构件的基础上，对其题材、流失、艺术特色、时代与出处作了梳理与鉴别，下编对北朝思惟像、吹横笛乐伎天像及弟子像进行专题研究，是目前中国学者整理与研究美国单馆馆藏中国佛教造像*为全面、*系统的著作。
